Daakaka is an endangered
language in Vanuatu. Do you know
what it means when a language is
endangered, Mack? It means there aren’t
many people who can speak it anymore.
Instead of learning
Daakaka, most children
grow up speaking the
national language
called Bislama. Only
around 1,000 people are
still alive who know how
to speak Daakaka, and
they live on an island called Ambrym. If
something doesn’t change soon, people
won’t know how to speak
Daakaka anymore!
A natural disaster is something like a
昀氀ood, a typhoon (that’s a really big rain
storm!), a tornado, or a huge 昀椀re.
The island where Daakaka is spoken
has an active volcano on it. That means
it could erupt at any time, and people
might have to move away to stay safe!
If they move away, it could be to a
place where people speak a different
Sometimes a

endangered because of a
